Sightings of the Mono Grande (the Big Monkey) aka the Maribundas - a mysterious forest creature feared by tribal people - were first recorded in South America by Pedro Cieza de Leon in 1533. Later, In the 19th century, naturalist Alexander von Humbolt would collect stories about a furry human-like creature rumored to capture women, build huts and occasionally eat human flesh. Reports continue to this day.
